Jr. Academy Skill Training Program Overview

This is a supplemental program available for recreational players who are looking for additional training.
This is not a replacement for our recreational program.

  • Designed for 4 - 12 year old year old recreational players desiring additional quality training

  • The Jr. Academy does not replace the traditional recreational soccer

  • Challenging training sessions are a key ingredient to the personal development of the player

  • Prepares players for the AFU Academy and Select programs (available for players ages 8+).

  • Purpose of the program is to provide a solid foundation for players who love the game to build upon.

  • Opportunity for additional training from licensed Academy and Select coaches at AFU.

  • Fun activities are designed to maximize comfort with the ball and vision of the field.

  • Each training activity will help players improve technically (skills), tactically (decision-making), physically (fitness) and psychologically (mental toughness).

Session Progression

This is what a typical session looks like.

  • Warm-up
  • Technical Activities (dribbling, passing and shooting)
  • Small-sided Games
  • Scrimmages

What to Bring

Your player should come with the following:

  • Soccer Ball
  • Shin Guards
  • Soccer Cleats
  • Plenty of Water
  • Sunscreen

Meet Gregg Tavani

Coaching Licences:

Playing History

Gregg's soccer playing career included playing at the Concorde Soccer Club for 11 years as a youth player, playing for the Dunwoody High School Men's Varsity Team for 4 years while captaining the team his senior year, and playing at Flagler College for 4 years.

Coaching Experience

Gregg's club soccer coaching career started at the Atlanta Fire United Soccer Association 20 years ago. He has also been a men's varsity high school soccer coach for 15 years. At Duluth HS, his teams reached the state championship game in 2003, and the state semifinals on 2 other occasions. In addition, he has been the director of the Tavani Soccer Camps for 16 years, and he received the GYSA boy's club soccer coach of the year in 2004.  In regards to coaching licenses, Gregg has a USSF 'A' License and National Youth License.

Personal Info

Gregg has a passion for coaching the most popular sport in the world & the beautiful game of soccer. In addition, he enjoys developing players into the best players & people they can become while using a coaching style that is both fun & intense. Gregg lives in Johns Creek with his wife Tracy, and 2 kids Emily & Brian. Finally, he has been a high school Social Studies teacher for 20 years, an Advanced Placement  Government & Economics teacher for 7 of those years, and he received the Duluth HS Teacher of the Year award in 2009-10.
