Academy and Select Tryouts

Dear AFU Parents and Players,

We hope that you and your families are safe and healthy during this challenging time. As you
know, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused AFU and other Metro Atlanta Soccer Clubs to alter
the process to conduct formal tryouts. Based on the current guidance from the Office of the
Governor, the GA Department of Public Health and the CDC regarding social distancing and with
the health, safety, and well-being of our players and families being the top priority, AFU along
with many other surrounding clubs have taken a collaborative approach to forego the traditional
tryout process for the 2020-2021 season.

OFFICIAL Southeastern Clubs Champions League statement:
"This Spring has landed the soccer world in an unprecedented situation due to the pandemic. The safety of our players remains our top priority. While every player, coach and club is ready to be back on the fields, the reality is that we must continue to adhere to the guidelines of our local government and health officials. As such, for the time being, there are severe restrictions on how players can come and train at the fields. Due to these limitations, tryouts would not be an effective process to assess players and place them on teams. In collaboration Ambush, AFU, Concorde, Georgia Express, GSA, LSA, NTH, Steamers FC, SSA, TYSA and UFA, have all made the difficult decision to cancel in-person, formal tryouts.”

While this is a major deviation from our traditional tryout process, the coaching staff at AFU have
worked hard to put together a thorough plan to evaluate, assess, and place players on to the
appropriate teams for the 2020-2021 season.

Our tryout registration is open and we want any player interested in playing Academy,
Select, SCCL and ECNL soccer with AFU for the 2020-2021 soccer year to register as soon
as possible if you haven’t already. Please keep in mind that registering does not commit
you to anything, but does help us plan appropriately.

Over the next few weeks, our technical staff and coaches will be working to contact all registered
players, regardless of whether they are an existing AFU player or a player from outside our club.
Our goal is to create an environment of diligence, fairness and professionalism.

What is the player placement process for returning AFU players?

All returning AFU players will need to complete the online tryout registration process.
Upon registering for tryouts, returning players will be able to notify AFU if they wish to be
considered for a higher-level team. This is a new step in the player placement process, that
involves and engages players to express their desires and goals in soccer while playing for AFU.
While this doesn’t guarantee upward movement, this will be a component factored into the initial
process as well as potential field evaluations at the start of the Fall season.
AFU coaching staff will continue to collaborate through conversations/video conferences with
DOC’s to ensure each returning player’s seasonal play, previous evaluations, demonstrated skill,
demonstrated progress & development, and overall body of work throughout the 2019-2020
soccer year is factored into their respective team placement for the 2020-2021 season. Should
the AFU coaching staff determine that roster adjustments need to be made, the focus will be on
moving a player up. This does not mean that a player may be better suited on a lower team for
developmental reasons, but we will do our best to minimize those moves.

What is the process for new players coming to AFU?

All new players will need to complete the online tryout registration process. Once the player
is registered for tryouts, AFU coaches will get in contact with the player and discuss appropriate
steps for evaluation and team placement for the upcoming season.

How is AFU going to evaluate players that have expressed interest in being on a higher team and/or evaluate new players coming to AFU?

Once we are cleared for ‘return to play’, AFU coaches will conduct evaluations during the first few
weeks of the Fall pre-season and make any necessary changes to team rosters. During this onfield
evaluation process AFU coaches will emphasize upward movement of players that will better
suit their abilities and continued development. After the initial few weeks, players will continue to
be observed and evaluated throughout the season and we will reserve the right to move players
to a higher and/or more appropriate level of play if that is decided to be in the best interest of the

Our final thoughts…

We realize this is not an ideal scenario or a perfect solution, but we are striving to put our best
foot forward during such a challenging and unique time. Our focus remains on providing a balance
between providing a safe and healthy environment for our players while also preparing for a
successful season.

While we remain hopeful that we will be able to return to the field and provide additional Summer
programs, we will not jeopardize the health and safety of our AFU families and players. We will
continue working to ensure that we have established a proper “Return to Play” plan that meets
our objectives and ensures we are within the guidelines and limitations set by the Governor’s
office and Public Health officials. Once we have completed this process, we will promptly share
and implement our “Return to Play” Plan.

As you are aware, this is still a very fluid situation and with guidelines and limitations constantly
being removed, added, or otherwise modified, we will continue to review and monitor the situation
and will adjust our schedules accordingly.

We truly appreciate all the support and understanding you have provided as AFU navigates
through this unique and challenging situation. As always, if you have any questions, please do
not hesitate to contact your coach or other AFU staff member and we will gladly assist you in any
way we can.

If you have any specific questions, please contact the Director of the program that your son or
daughter will be participating in.
